Critique of Pure Image - Between Fake and Quotation
copy me – i want to travel
Video film between documentary and fiction, 68 min., 2004.
Film about the Bulgarian copy of the Apple II computer, produced in Pravetz, reverse engineering, the green card and women in this business.
Since 1998, Pauline Boudry, Brigitta Kuster and Renate Lorenz have worked together on a variety of projects. They have published a collection of theoretical texts on the economy and subjectivity of gender at the work place, what they call “sexual work,” written and staged a play around being a migrant in Germany, and researched and built exhibitions on urban development in a globalized world. The approach of their projects with the media of text, theater, video and exhibitions corresponds to a queer project; instead of presupposing identities and differences, they examine which processes of power and domination produce these identities and differences.
The copy of which copy me – i want to travel is talking was produced in Bulgaria: in the eighties the Western product Apple-II was dismantled there and put together again as the Eastern product Pravetz II. The reverse engineering of a successful personal computer, the copy comes into operation in the Cold War. Unofficially it is a copy; officially it is a Bulgarian production. As every copy it fails its original.
